TAPE MACHINES

Studer A80 VU MK III 2” 16/24 trk

A fantastic example of one of the most iconic pieces of recording equipment. Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’, Queen’s ‘A Night At The Opera’ and Peter Gabriel’s ‘So’ are just a few of the thousands of classic albums made on these machines.

Our example was rescued from the collection of legendary bluesman Seasick Steve and tirelessly restored from the ground up by Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Audio Electronics to near showroom condition.

It can be configured with a 16 track head block for the ultimate in analog fidelity, or with a 24 track block for higher track count.

  • Circa 1980

  • 16 & 24 track head blocks

  • 15 & 30 IPS tape speeds

  • Aligned for RTM SM911 2” tape

  • Channel remote rack mounted in control room

  • Autolocator installed in Trident console

Studer A80 VU MK II 1/2” 2 trk

1/2” tape is considered the gold standard for mixing and mastering. Whether bouncing your ITB mix or stems out for unparalleled warmth and glue, or capturing your final analog mix from 2” tape through Trident keeping the entire recording process 100% analog this machine offers flawless performance and sonics.

This machine started life in the mid 70’s as a 1” 8 track. In the 90’s it was purchased by none other than Noel Gallagher who had it converted to a 1/2” 2 track and it was allegedly used to capture the mixes on their somewhat disappointing fourth album ‘Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants’.

We purchased the machine in a somewhat sorry condition from the band during a storage clearance in early 2024 and restored it to glorious full working order.

The fidelity of this machine is astonishing. Running clean it’s like digital but better, push the needles into the red it imparts a delicious warmth, thickening and smoothing. Without a doubt the ultimate analog experience!

  • Circa 1975

  • 1/2” tape width for ultimate sonics

  • 15 & 30 IPS tape speeds

  • Aligned for RTM SM911 1/2” tape

Scully 284 1” 8 trk

The Scully 284 was the first widely available 1” 8 track multitrack entering production in 1966. Scully was ubiquitous with the sound of popular music produced in America in the late 60’s. The Beach Boys used a Scully 284 to record their seminal album ‘Pet Sounds’. Motown, STAX and Muscle Shoals all used Scully 284’s during the late 60’s and early 70’s.

This stunning piece of audio history may be the only working example in the UK. Our example clearly has not seen heavy use as it is in almost mint condition, requiring only gentle work to restore it to full working condition.

Whilst our Studer A80’s represent the pinnacle of Swiss analog recording technology, this machine showcases a much simpler and less sophisticated record making process. Naturally the limited track count, lack of time counter, 7.5 IPS tape speed and fully discrete electronics encourage a different approach to production.

  • Circa 1969

  • 7.5 & 15 IPS tape speeds

  • Aligned for BASF PEM 468 1” tape

Tascam 32 1/4” 2trk

This trashy little number is there for when our other tape machines are just too damn good! It’s fantastic for use as a tape echo, or for looping craziness. I wouldn’t trust it on your stereo mix down personally…
